Air Quality Alerts Issued Across 11 States, Residents Urged to Stay Indoors
US · Published May 19, 2026
Millions of residents across 11 states in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Southern California are under air quality alerts due to elevated pollution levels.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the primary concern in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic is ground-level ozone, a key component of smog, exacerbated by hot, sunny conditions and high-pressure systems.
In Southern California, wildfire smoke from active fires, such as the Sandy Fire near Simi Valley, is significantly degrading air quality.

Why It's Important?

Poor air quality poses serious health risks, especially for sensitive groups. Exposure to elevated ozone levels and fine particulate matter can irritate the lungs, trigger asthma attacks, and worsen heart and lung diseases. In Southern California, wildfire smoke contains fine particles that can penetrate deep into the lungs, increasing the risk of respiratory infections and hospitalizations. Urban areas with dense traffic and industrial emissions are experiencing the worst conditions. Health officials warn that prolonged exposure could lead to significant respiratory and cardiovascular issues, particularly for outdoor workers and active individuals.
